Animahenasyon 2010 is now accepting entries

The Animation Council of the Philippines, Inc. (ACPI) is calling all budding and professional animators from across the country to participate and submit their animated works to Animahenasyon 2010: 4th Philippine Animation Festival, as it formally opens and accepts entries to this year’s festival. Entry forms may be downloaded from the ACPI web site at http://www.animationcouncil.org. The deadline for submission of entries is on September 15. Animahenasyon 2010 is co-presented by Ateneo de Naga University and will be held in this premier 3D animation school from November 23 to 26 in Naga City, Philippines. Holding the animation festival in Naga is part of ACPI’s thrusts to strengthen the regional animation of the country, and is also part of the Council’s year long 10th anniversary celebration. In an effort to build an audience, awareness and development of original contents, ACPI puts together its flagship project through an annual animation festival called Animahenasyon that showcases original animated works of both aspiring and professional animators in the country through a competition. The festival is composed of the professional and the student/amateur divisions that will have different running time categories: 1 to 5 minutes; 6 to 20 minutes, 21 to 60 minutes, and the full-animated feature (more than 60 minutes). There are also categories for music video, title sequence, public information, demo reel, and TV series. There will also be animated works in exhibition (full-length, special citation, and past Animahenasyon winners). Last year’s grand prize winner of Animahenasyon was Mutya (Muse) by Nelson “Blog” Caliguia, Jr. It is a touching tale of an unlikely friendship between the forest spirits or “anitos” and a one-of-a-kind girl who can see them. It also tackles the timely issue of environmental degradation and the dire consequences of industrialization to the environment. “Mutya” also won the best animated short (6-20 minutes) in the professional division and was awarded the Hero TV’s choice for best capturing the theme “finding the hero within.” Coming from a family of animators, Blog produced “Mutya” as a tribute for his late mother, Mina, who passed away in 2008. It is also largely based on the original story that his mom wrote. This is the second time that Blog won the grand prize in Animahenasyon. He first received this recognition in the very first Animahenasyon festival in 2007 for his entries “Inday Wanda,” and “Doodle of Doom” that he co-directed with Jason Confessor. Animahenasyon serves as a venue for Filipino animators to present their world-class ideas, and opens doors of opportunities for them to meet with and be inspired by the finest names in the industry. It also aims to create greater awareness of the Philippine animation industry and its contributions to the global entertainment business, while tapping locally produced content for promotion in animation markets here and abroad. ACPI’s vision is to make Philippines as the prime provider of animation and content creation services to the global marketplace. On the other hand, ACPI’s mission is to be the center of excellence for animation and content creation services through building more efficient and effective collaborative business practices that will elevate the country’s economy and culture. As an organized body, ACPI aims to promote the Filipino talent both locally and internationally. With the cooperation of its members as well as the Philippine government, it is envisioned that the member studios and schools will be considered competitive both creatively and technologically. ACPI is a non-stock and non-profit organization whose member companies specialize mainly in, but not limited to, 2D, Flash or 3D animation. It aims to promote the animation industry globally with the intention of creating an identity for the Philippines to be considered amongst the preferred countries that service the animation industry. There are also categories for music video, title sequence, public information, demo reel, and TV series. There will also be animated works in exhibition (full-length, special citation, and past Animahenasyon winners). Last year’s grand prize winner of Animahenasyon is Love and Marriage, a jab at the folly of racial prejudice in marriage, as seen through the eyes of its Chinese-Filipino filmmaker Kenny Lynn Tai. Love and Marriage is a narrative musical cartoon that relates the story of Chinese-Filipino interracial marriage, and a comic take on this long-standing issue in the Chinese society captured in 7.5 minutes. Tai is graduated from De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde with a degree in Multimedia Arts, and is now a freelance animator. This year’s Animahenasyon will feature a global animation forum where delegates from the continents of North America, Latin America, Canada, Australia and the Asia-Pacific will come to the country and showcase the latest trends and best practices from their respective countries in the field of animation, game development and the digital creative industry in general. These foreign representatives will present the current state/condition of their industry and feature sample contents from their country. These delegates will also bring with them a group of people for possible business matching in the Philippines. The global animation forum shall provide a venue for exchange among animators, producers, industry supporters, and possible business opportunities Animahenasyon 2009 will also include an investors’ forum where business seminars would be held in conjunction with business meetings. The forum will cover content sales and distribution, outsourcing, co-production, financing and even for education partnerships. This assumes a full day, divided into six sessions of 60 minutes each for presentation with an open forum. This component of Animahenasyon shall help set direction for the development of the animation industry. Also part of Animahenasyon 2009 is the animation master classes/ workshops, and exhibit of works of this year’s lifetime achievement awardee Jose Zabala Santos, nephew of renowned artist Nonoy Marcelo. Animahenasyon serves as a venue for Filipino animators to present their world-class ideas, and opens doors of opportunities for them to meet with and be inspired by the finest names in the industry. ANIMATE THIS: Animahenasyon 2007 highlights original Pinoy animation

The Filipino animator must be one of the most overlooked artists in the Philippines. As diligent and creative as the Pinoy independent filmmaker but not as recognized, the local animators have, for the longest time, been looking for a chance (and in some cases, a venue) to finally showcase their originality and talent. Strangely enough, it is the foreign animation companies that have been recognizing the local animators by giving them steady work for the many years now. Indeed, it has been an open secret that some of the cartoons produced by foreign production houses employ Pinoy animators. No doubt about it, Filipino animators are talented but the question is: when will they be given the spotlight they so rightfully deserve? Enter ANIMAHENASYON 2007, Pinoy Animation Festival slated on November 21 to 25 at Robinsons Galleria’s Indie Cine. The festival aims to finally give professional and amateur Filipino animators a venue where they could screen their original works. “I think it is about time to give these animators a chance to show their own works,” says Ricky Orellana, festival director of ANIMAHENASYON. “After all, they have been working on other’s people’s materials for the longest time.” He says that viewers might be surprised to discover that Pinoy animators are not just copycats of American or Japanese animation. “We have our own style,” he says. Indeed, if the entries this year prove anything, it’s that Filipino animators are hard to pigeonhole. “Some are in 2-D and 3-D and some used cell animation but what is really surprising is that we received entries from all over the Philippines: from Baguio to Iloilo, from Lapu Lapu to Marinduque,” Orellana said. Suffice to say that the topics are also diverse. Some are interpretation of local folklore and some are original stories by the animators themselves. “Even now, I expect our judges to have a hard time picking which entries to include in the final list,” the festival director said, “because some of the entries are really good.” And since ANIMAHENASYON’s goal is to spotlight Pinoy animators, what better way to do that than to have two very successful Filipino animators from PIXAR (Toy Story, Finding Nemo) and Dreamworks (Shrek, Madagascar) to give a talk during the festival. “Aside from the original Pinoy works, we are also inviting two Pinoy animators who have done significant work in mainstream Hollywood,” says Orellana. “Hopefully, the forum will give animators a chance to discuss pertinent issues concerning not only the local industry but the international animation industry as well.” And like any other festival, ANIMAHENASYON will hand out various awards for deserving entries. Up for grabs are the GRAND PRIZE AWARD, AWARD for BEST REGIONAL ENTRY, JURY’S SPECIAL AWARD, and AUDIENCE’S SPECIAL AWARD, among others. But of course, as the festival organizers never fail to point out, the real prize is that finally Pinoy animators are not just anonymous workers toiling on some cartoon series but, through ANIMAHENASYON, artists in the real sense of the word. ANIMAHENASYON 2007 is spearheaded by the Animation Council of the Philippines Inc. (ACPI), a non-stock and non-profit organization. The members of ACPI specialize mainly in—but not limited to— 2D or 3D animation. The organization, which is recognized and supported by the Philippine government, aims to create an identity for the Philippines to be considered among the preferred countries that service the animation industry.
